What does street sexual harassment do?

The issue addressed in this article is the need to conceptualize street sexual harassment suffered by women in everyday life. This phenomenon has been traditionally taken lightly by society, but it has strong repercussions for a woman’s life, the ways in which she performs in the public space and her actions. With the aim of contributing to this conceptualization, this text is going to take as a basis John Austin’s speech acts theory and Rae Langton’s subordination analysis. The objective is to show how words and actions that make up street sexual harassment fulfil the subordination criteria of a speech act by ranking women as inferior, legitimating discriminatory behaviours and depriving them of their capacity of response and complaint. Then, to the question «What does street harassment do? » it will be said that, as a speech act, it subordinates.
